I recognize this pattern from my university, there are lots of "old geeks" there. If it doesn't earn you credit anywhere else to have been there from "the beginning", it sure earns you credit at university.
Only problem is that if you start saying you know something you actually do not know you are usually caught in the act the people who really do know it is around and many people are actually genuinely interested in these "old techs", they are not only looking for "geek points".
